Requirements to Join

American Legion Member

To be eligible for membership in The American Legion, you must have:

  • served in the United States Armed Forces on active duty since December 7, 1941 or;
  • received a DD-214 with an honorable discharge or discharge under honorable conditions or;
  • be still on Active Duty.

Auxiliary Member

Eligibility for membership in the American Legion Auxiliary is determined by The American Legion. Membership in the auxiliary is limited to those who have a direct personal connection (mothers, spouse, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, and grandmothers) with active-duty service (see dates below). This service is through a member of one’s own immediate family who served in the Armed Forces. Upon establishment of eligibility, they may become a member of the local unit of the auxiliary. A member of the local unit is also a member of the department and national organization, just as a citizen of Chicago is also a citizen of Illinois, and of the United States. By payment of dues in the local unit, a member also contributes to the support of the department and the national organization.

SAL Member

All male descendants adopted sons, and stepsons of members of The American Legion, and such male descendants of veterans who died in service during the period of April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918, or any time from December 7, 1941, to date, who served honorably, as set forth in Article IV, Section 1, of the National Constitution of The American Legion, or who died subsequent to their honorable discharge from such service, shall be eligible for membership in the Sons of The American Legion.
